McKees Rocks spring-maker looks international following Canadian expansion (Pittsburgh Business Times - by Justine Coyne - July 3, 2014)
Although the company has had success selling its custom made springs domestically for the past 75 years, as demand for U.S.-made products has increased, McKees Rocks-based Ace Wire Spring and Form Co. is seeing growing interest in its products around the globe.
"I think there's been a shift to where people are now demanding quality," said Sales Engineering Manager Bob McCormick. "Before when we would be putting a bid in against a company from China, we knew we wouldn't get it. Today that isn't the case."
While there are times where spending an additional 3 cents per spring can be a deal breaker for some buyers, he said others see the value in spending a little more.
"Let's just say when things go wrong with the end product, that customer doesn't blame it on the spring company," he said. "They're coming to who sold them the product."
Last year, the company expanded its presence in Canada and within its first year doubled its sales to the country, according to McCormick. For 2014, he said the company is on pace to have even more business in the country.
John Higgins, marketing manager and sales support, said the company has been taking advantage of international trade show opportunities to get introductions into new markets. He said inquiries for the company's products have been growing in China and the Middle East.
Higgins said the company has recently hired a Canadian sales rep and is in the process of researching the possibility of taking a similar approach in Mexico.
